FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about our products, shipping, and how we work.
What is the Shibari Study shop?
Ever since we launched, it’s been our mission to foster connection by providing high quality and affordable shibari education, and now we want to offer the rope to match. Whether you’re an expert or beginner, our shop will carry everything you need for a great rope session, along with some limited-edition merch and a few fun extras.
Why jute?
Every type of rope has its pros and cons, but for many people practicing shibari, jute is the go-to natural fiber rope: it handles well, holds frictions with ease, offers a beautifully traditional aesthetic and, with proper care, your jute ropes can last for years. Each type of rope will also require different tying techniques to account for its particular properties: all of our Shibari Study tutorials are created with and for jute rope, so if you’re wanting to follow along, jute will be your best bet.
What is the difference between treated and raw jute rope?
While treated jute rope feels soft and pliable- kind of like a broken-in pair of jeans, raw jute rope tends to be stiffer and scratchier with the benefit of being a blank canvas for you to treat and condition according to your own preferences.
We love the way our resident rope nerd Mo Bights described it in this article on How To Treat Jute Rope For Shibari.
How do I choose the right diameter for my shibari ropes?
6mm is typically the standard rope diameter used in shibari, and starting there is a good choice. Some people tie with 5mm rope, which will be a little less strong, particularly in suspensions, and will distribute load over a smaller surface area. For those who prefer the look of skinnier rope, a good compromise could be choosing skinnier rope for playing on the floor or building harnesses on the body and sticking with 6mm for uplines!
Do your ropes have a scent or require break-in?
New Ogawa rope has a kerosene-like scent, but this usually fades away with use and some airing out. As for “breaking in”, all rope will get softer and more pliable with time. If you’ve bought untreated rope, it may just take a little longer to lose its scratchiness and loosen up.
